Join fraternity to meet people in college?
I just transfered to a new college in January which kind of sucks because everybody already knows each other because it is the second semester for freshman. I am finding it hard to meet people that I can hang out with and become friends with so I am wondering if I should join a fraternity to do this. I will be going into nursing so would that complicate things when I actually get into the rigorous curriculum of nursing school? Can I leave a fraternity when I need to leave or will I get maimed for leaving?
Thanks
Hey! I was president of a sorority last year, and I really believe that a fraternity is an AMAZING way to meet people you can be close with for the rest of your life. And no, you won’t get your head bitten off for leaving, you are going to school to get an education, not party, they will understand.
However, a word of warning. 25% of fraternities reinforce the horrible stereotypes placed on greek life. Really do your research about which fraternity to join. If you find the right fit, you will know you have support and friendship for a lifetime, but if you join a vapid, stereotypical fraternity that is on campus for the wrong reason, GET OUT! RUN! You are too smart to be surround by people not worth your time. You will know these fraternities, they will be the ones you never actually see in classes that smell like liquor. Also, don’t rely on their campus reputation, the biggest, most popular fraternities at my campus are also the most douche-tastic. Find a good, solid house with a reliable reputation and guys that you can really see spending time with.
Overall though, Greek life for me has been an amazing, rewarding experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Just be careful!
