How can I get accepted into FIT(Fashion Institute of Technology)?

I have always the been set on going into fashion design, and FIT is the only New York school I like and the only one I can afford. But I dont have the slightest idea if I am comparable to other applicants. Here’s all my qualifications:

I’m a senior at San Diego State finishing my major in Business-Marketing and a minor in Arts.I’ve taken 3 courses on the side at a local community college: Apparel Construction 1, Fashion Sketching, and Flat Pattern. I’m studying abroad next semester in Milan. My GPA at SDSU is currently a 3.34. Im part of Volunteer San Diego and in the American Marketing Association., and considering joining a coed business fraternity on campus. I can draw very well, can sew a bit, know a little of embroidery, screen printing and dying.

Here’s why im worried:
I have no garnments to show and I wouldnt know how to make anything amazing yet, I dont know how sew well enough yet.
Most importantly I HAVE NO INTERNSHIPS OR WORK EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER! I take 17-20 units a semester, am part of that organization and have a job, I never had and wont have the time.

What do you think? Do you think they’ll care that I have no experience? can I get in?

You’ll never know if you don’t try. Just be truthful, be yourself, and explain your goals and your situation as best as you can in essays and in interviews – you might be surprised as to what might happen.

In the meantime, looking into internships and jobs is a good idea. It looks like you’ve done a little bit of a lot of different things in the business world, so maybe this could demonstrate a more comprehensive understanding of the marketing aspect of the fashion industry (which is of course extremely necessary for anyone who wants to be a success).

I say go for it. If it doesn’t work out this year, keep trying your hands at more things (like internships and jobs) to add more "tools to your belt" before you apply again next year. Don’t give up, and don’t admit to anyone that you don’t think you’re qualified (confidence counts). Good luck!
