The simple answer is that our alphabet, which is basically the Latin alphabet that the Romans used, was based on the earlier Greek alphabet, which was based on the still earlier Phoenician alphabet. The Romans adopted the Greek alphabet from the Etruscans who they conquered in central Italy. However this only concerns capital letters. Lower case letters developed later on.
References :
World Book

Well the Greek Alphabet itself is not original, its based on the PHOENICIAN & ARAMAIC Alphabet, Aleph, Bit, Gammel equals Alpha, Beta, Gamma........so the question should be how does the Aramaic and Phoenician Alphabet influence our current alphabet......i bet youd get a A grade for showing you know the origins of the Alphabet.
References :
Alpha beta. Probably a coincidence that the first two letters of the Greek alphabet sound like alphabet.

There is not a perfect congruence, but some of the shapes and some of the sounds of the Greek letters are similar to those of our alphabet.
References :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_alphabet
